Despacito was released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the number one streamed track in just 6 months. It was a mix of reggaeton, pop and rock was not only a way to bring renewed interest to reggaeton music but it also attracted attention towards Latin music more generally. The Billboard Top 100 featured two songs which were Spanish predominantly, as well as four more in the year 2016. In the midst of Despacito's popularity, however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it onto the Top 100 for 2020. there were 41 songs. After Justin Bieber released his bilingual remix of Despacito in 2017, well-known musicians began to join forces with reggaeton artists. Drake and Bad Bunny were part of a team in the project MIA MIA (2018) and Madonna and Maluma collaborated on Medellin in the year 2019. The year 2000 saw a number of reggaeton stars were complaining about that the genre was moving towards mainstream. However, a younger generation such as Rauw Alejandro, sought to keep reggaeton evolving. The genre often incorporated elements of different genres as well as electronic dance.
